Extended use of eye assessment equipment in primary care (ES-8016)
In this unit, Dr Russell Bach presents a lecture on eye assessment equipment in primary care. An overview of ophthalmic examination is presented, along with information about specific pieces of equipment pertinent to general practice settings. Dr Bill Glasson also demonstrates use of a slitlamp.

Learning Objectives:
- Be able to appropriately use equipment and tests for eye examination, including Snellen chart, Colour vision plates, cover test, direct ophthalmoscope, slit lamp and tonometer
- Be able to appropriately use topical eye preparations for examination purposes e.g. fluorescein, topical anaesthetic
- Understand the utility of photographs from non-mydriatic fundal camera in primary care, particularly relating to diabetic eye disease

Expert presenters: Dr Russell Bach
Russell Bach is a University of Queensland graduate, specialist ophthalmologist who is in private practice at Greenslopes Private Hospital. He is a visiting medical officer at Princess Alexandra Hospital and has been a keen teacher of trainee registrars and general practitioners for over 20 years.
He is a political advocate of professional standards, is committed to evidence based medicine and is the immediate past chair of the state branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He has previously run the general practice upskilling programme and enjoys developing practical skills in his fellow practitioners particularly in workshop situations.
Dr Bill Glasson
Dr Bill Glasson was elected Federal President of the Australian Medical Association in May 2003, and was re-elected to a second term in May 2004. He recently received an Honorary Fellowship to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and is also the Federal Vice President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He is Chair of Cancer Australia and Federal Hospitaller of St John Australia. Bill is a consulting ophthalmologist to the Australian Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and has worked in a voluntary capacity in various indigenous communities. He recently travelled to East Timor also in a voluntary capacity as part of a team which treated in excess of 3 000 East Timorese patients.
Bill completed his ophthalmology training in Brisbane, and completed postgraduate training in England, in particular in the area of ocular oncology and also spent time studying oculoplastics and lacrimal surgery. After returning to Australia at the end of 1988, he began private practice on Wickham Terrace in Brisbane, which he continues today. He took up a Visiting Medical Officer position at the Mater Adults Hospital, and has recently expanded into rural outreach services at Kingaroy, Longreach, Blackall, Barcaldine, Winton, Birdsville, Bedourie and Boulia.
