Short Course: Mental Health Skills for GPs [HI4280]
This Short Course is accredited by the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) as a Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) program.
Completion of a MHST course and a Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) Skills Training course enables a GP to register as a provider of FPS.

This short course will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills to assess and manage patients with common mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. The education provides practical tools to assist you in applying your learning back into practice and an opportunity to collaborate with your peers.

Be able to access and use the proformas for a mental health assessment, mental health plan and mental health review in your clinical practice
Demonstrate a capacity to reassess people with a known mental disorder
Demonstrate the ability to negotiate a shared understanding of a mental health problem with consumers, which culminates in an agreed care plan
Demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of local mental health care providers in public and private systems and non-government organisations
Demonstrate a knowledge of and rationale for the appropriate use of effective pharmacological and psychological therapies (alone or in combination) for treatment of common mental disorders
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of consumer and carer education and the ability to introduce consumer and carer self-help strategies
Have access to accurate and consumer friendly educational materials on mental health
Demonstrate an understanding of the need for systematic monitoring of the effectiveness of the mental health plan
Be able to assist people with self-monitoring strategies to identify recurrence of mental health disorders and to increase proactive steps in response to early warning signs
Be able to assist a consumer and carer to develop a personal relapse prevention plan
Be able to transfer generic knowledge and skills relating to management across a range of patients and mental health disorders
Demonstrate your progress towards meeting the learning objectives relating to improving your assessment and management skills in mental health
Be able to reflect on and discuss your views on managing mental health disorders with your peers
Demonstrate an understanding of the need for systematic assessment, psychiatric history taking, mental status assessment and risk assessment
Be able to undertake systematic assessment, including interview skills, psychiatric history taking, mental status assessment and risk assessment
Demonstrate skills in detecting the common, disabling and treatable mental health disorders in general practice (e.g. depression, anxiety disorders and somatisation)
Demonstrate an understanding of the epidemiology and aetiology of common mental health conditions and the complexities of comorbidity
Demonstrate appropriate use of psychometric instruments to aid assessment and to identify change
