Short Course: Ageing – Common geriatric syndromes and their assessment 1 – delirium/ dementia/ falls [HI4540]
This short course commences by providing GPs with a conceptual framework for managing frail, older Australians using ‘Delirium’ and ‘Falling’ as case studies. It then explores aetilogical, assessment and management approaches to dementia in the general practice setting, and more specifically, the management of difficult behavioural and psychological dementia presentations. It concludes with a focus on mobility and QOL in the elderly, and falls prevention approaches appropriate for general practice.
Estimate to complete short course: 6.75 hours
Australian society is ageing rapidly, with a quadrupling of Australians > 85 years expected by 2050. Australia has a limited number of geriatricians to support this growing need, and much of the responsibility for managing the unique needs of older Australians - physical, psychosocial and environmental - will fall to primary care practitioners. By arming you with advanced knowledge and skills specific to frailty, altered mobility, and cognitive dysfunction, this course will provide a framework for improving the quality of life of your elderly patients through optimal assessment and management.
Topics:
clinical problems and iatrogenesis (especially polypharmacy) contributing to frailty
how to approach geriatric syndromes from the geriatrician’s perspective
assessment and differential diagnosis of delirium
changes in mobility with ageing
assessment of risk factors for falls
evidence-based intervention strategies for falls prevention
the “normal” brain and ageing
how to distinguish between mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease
screening tests and management of dementia
awareness of the high prevalence of behavioural and psychological symptoms associated with dementia and treatment options for depression, agitation, memory loss, and delusions
