Estimate to complete short course: 4.00 hours
Several of the most common issues for ageing Australians are addressed in this short course: QUM (quality use of medicines), the management of incontinence, and approaches to supporting existing carers, including community resources available .
It is estimated that 90% of persons over the age of 75 are on at least one prescription medication. In ‘Quality use of medicines in the elderly’ (ES-8065), pharmacist Geraldine Moses will discuss:
- the risk factors for problems with medications,
- the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes with ageing,
- the etiology and signs of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in the elderly,
- strategies for the management of polypharmacy
- and the drugs you should avoid in your older patients.
‘Managing and maintaining continence’ (ES-8066) will present the ins and outs of incontinence:
- the risk factors and treatable causes of incontinence
- the types of incontinence and their individual assessment and management
- conservative (lifestyle), medication, and interventional treatment strategies
- catheterisation selection and management
The majority of the responsibility for managing the unique needs of the increasing number of older Australians - physical, psychosocial and environmental - falls not only to GPs, but also to the primarily informal carers who tend to their needs on a day to day basis. ‘Caring for ageing Australians’ (ES-8069) will provide you with an awareness of the carer community resources available, how they are structured, the services they can provide to patients, and the effects of carer strain on the well-being of the carer.
